Deliverability
Key takeaway: Bounce rate is the fastest way to destroy a sending domain, and it is almost entirely preventable. Keep hard bounces under 2 percent, verify immediately before every send, and suppress bounces forever.
Bounce rate is the fastest way to destroy a sending domain, and it is almost entirely preventable. This is the least glamorous lever in cold email and one of the highest leverage.
Why bounces are so damaging
When you email an address that does not exist, the receiving server records that you sent mail to a nonexistent user. Do it occasionally and nothing happens. Do it at scale and you look exactly like a spammer working from a scraped list, because that is the behavior the pattern belongs to. Providers respond by throttling you, then filtering you, then blocking you. A single unverified campaign can undo months of careful warm-up.
What "clean" actually means
Keep hard bounces under 2 percent. Under 1 percent is where you want to live. If a campaign is bouncing above 5 percent, stop it mid flight, because the damage compounds with every send.
What verification checks
A good verification pass catches: addresses that do not exist, syntax errors and typos, disposable and temporary domains, role accounts (info@, support@, sales@, which carry high complaint risk and low reply rate), catch-all domains that accept everything and tell you nothing, and known spam traps. That last one matters most. Spam traps are dead addresses deliberately kept alive to catch senders who do not clean their lists, and hitting one is a fast track to a blocklist.
The workflow that works
Build or buy the list.
Verify immediately before the send, not when you built it. Lists decay fast: people change jobs constantly, and B2B data goes stale at roughly 2 to 3 percent per month.
Remove everything marked invalid. Remove role accounts unless you have a specific reason.
Decide your catch-all policy. Sending to catch-alls is a judgment call, since verification cannot confirm them either way. Many senders exclude them from cold campaigns entirely.
Re-verify any list older than 30 days before reusing it.
Continuously suppress: every hard bounce, every complaint, every unsubscribe goes on a permanent do-not-contact list.
Real-time verification means checking an address at the moment of send rather than in a batch beforehand. It closes the last gap, catching addresses that died between your verification run and your campaign. That is exactly what FrostyVerify is built for, and it is the cheapest insurance in your entire stack: a fraction of a cent per address against the cost of burning a domain you spent a month warming. New accounts get 500 free credits on signup, so you can clean your next list at no cost.
