Infrastructure
Key takeaway: Eight layers, built bottom up, before a single cold email goes out. Each layer depends on the ones below it. Deliverability is a chain, and it breaks at the weakest link, which is almost always the one someone skipped to save a week.
This is the whole stack on one page: what to build, in what order, before a single cold email goes out.
Layer 1: Domains
Buy secondary sending domains, never your primary. Choose close variants of your real brand. Redirect each to your live website. Budget one domain per two to three inboxes.
Layer 2: Mailboxes
Choose your type: Microsoft Azure for cost efficient volume, Google Workspace for peak deliverability. Most senders run Azure as the base and add Google for high value prospects. Ideally both arrive pre-warmed. Keep two to three inboxes per domain.
Layer 3: Authentication
SPF, DKIM, and DMARC on every sending domain, all passing, before anything else happens. Start DMARC at p=none, tighten to quarantine once your reports are clean. This is mandatory for bulk senders at Google and Yahoo, not optional.
Layer 4: Tracking domain
A custom CNAME subdomain per sending domain, so you are not inheriting a shared tracking domain's reputation. Or skip open tracking entirely and measure replies.
Layer 5: Warm-up
Around two weeks per inbox, ramping volume gradually with genuine engagement. No exceptions, no shortcuts. This is where impatient senders destroy the four layers beneath.
Layer 6: List hygiene
Verify before every campaign. Hard bounces under 2 percent. Suppress every bounce, complaint, and unsubscribe permanently. Real-time verification with a tool like FrostyVerify closes the gap between building a list and sending to it.
Layer 7: Sending discipline
Keep per inbox volume low and provider specific: 2 to 3 a day on Azure, up to 15 a day on Google. Random intervals. Spread across many inboxes rather than pushing a few. Plain text style, one link, no attachments, easy opt out.
Layer 8: Monitoring
Google Postmaster Tools and Microsoft SNDS for reputation. Seed tests for actual placement. Reply rate as your real world canary. Bounce rate as your alarm.
The order matters
Each layer depends on the ones below it. Great copy on unwarmed inboxes fails. Perfect warm-up on an unauthenticated domain fails. A flawless stack sending to an unverified list fails. Deliverability is a chain, and it breaks at the weakest link, which is almost always the one someone skipped to save a week.
The build versus buy math. Doing all eight layers by hand takes most teams 20 to 40 hours for a first cohort, plus ongoing maintenance every time they scale, plus the cost of the mistakes made while learning. That is the calculation Frostmailer is built around: mailboxes that arrive with layers 1 through 5 already done, so you start at sending discipline instead of at DNS.
